CANS FOR THE COAST

Green Monkeys Present

Operation

Cans for the Coast

Mission:

This recycling program promises to reduce waste in our community and promote the recylcing of materials and sustain a clean environment in which we live in by raising awareness to all persons about the importance on recycling. All moneys collected will go to a coastal clean up.

Goal:

Activate a 4 step process which will achieve community awareness of coastal concerns and promote involvement with minimal commitment.

Step 1:

Solicit the community to donate their old trash cans for our cause(being that the entire city is now switched to the automatic dumping blue cans and they have no real use for their old cans) .  This will be achieved through media venues and press releases. (Aka, Good Morning Acadiana, Fox as well as radio and print advertisements. )

Step 2:

Once the cans are collected, we make a demo of custom artistic recycling bins.  The idea was inspired by the current pelican statues in the area. The goal is to make art out of recycling bins. This will be visually appealing as well as supportive of the cause to clean the coast.  We will be sponsoring a contest at the local university and to local artists to decorate the trash cans and turn them into recycling bins.

Step 3:

We will make a portfolio with the cans and offer custom decorations for business to buy these recycling bins as well as to have them placed on and around campus or at the business itself.  The goal is to have the Business have a hand in making their custom designed recycling bin. The benefits for the business are two fold. First would be helping the environment and the second would be advertising for the business itself with a logo or design on the can itself. (Hopefully the cans will last forever).

Step 4:

The Cans will be used to collect aluminum only and the Green Monkeys will be responsible for the collection and recycling of the aluminum.  The cans will be recycled by weekly  or whenever the phone number is called to come service. All monies raised from the collection of the cans will be placed in a fund with the purpose to send a group of green monkeys to the coast to help fight the damage from the oil spill.  We would hope to team up with other organizations in our efforts for the actual trip and promote other groups to join with us.

April from Louisiana

Green Monkeys Louisiana have been rolling this year!! Thanks to our new crew, Jason Boudin and Courtney Jagneaux.

January was our spring fling. We set out and for two hours on an amazing day, played Frisbee and picked up trash. Awesome!!

February was our Mardi Gras 2nd Line. We followed the Kings Parade with signs like “ monkey see Monkey DO” and “you CAN do it”. We collected cans from the crowds and reinforced the ideals that you can have fun and do good for the world at the same time. We recycled the cans and donated the proceeds to Earth Share Gardens. 23 dollars isn’t much but it can do a lot when you put it to good use.

March was a huge success with an amazing turnout for our annual canoe trip. We set out at 1ish and paddled down to bayou tortue. From there we discovered that behind the airport, the wind from such an open area blew huge amounts of trash down to the southern wilderness areas. We pulled in and claimed a bank then got to work. We collected about 4 canoes FULL of trash from our one trip. Great Job TEAM!! We also participated in the annual bowl for kids sake. We were able to have two teams show up raising a whopping 400 dollars for the big brothers and big sisters program. Yet another great fun day and what a way to show the world how to have fun and help at the same time!!

April is a special month for south Louisiana. It is the host of one of the largest free festivals in the world. Festivals International. We managed to secure a booth on the festival grounds downtown! We will be putting up our tent and having a recycling booth . We will also be doing trash pickups at dusk and showing the town and the world who the green monkeys are!!

October Green Monkeys Louisiana

October is our membership drive month. This month is special because the weather is beautiful, there are tons of festivals going on and we have activities every weekend. It takes someone from anther land to truly see and appreciate what our culture has to offer. The green Monkeys are certainly buisy in their high season with five events. We are half way through the month and are already making waves. The calendar of Events this month are
October 4th 2009 Bayou Vermillion Festival
We connected with s.p.e.a.k on campus and are trying to make an alliance so we can have a presence on campus. The festival went amazingly well except that it rained hard. all day... More work with danica and the BVD proves well for us. Also the Unveling of the water shed exhibit transforms vermillion ville from just a museum city to a sience park.  Check out the Article.  http://www.theadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=DG&Dato=20091004&Kategori=NEWS01&Lopenr=910040804&Ref=PH
We set up a booth for environmental groups and gave away buttons for pictures of monkeys. We are planning to make a collage of the drawings and then take a big picutre of the collage. Soo cool!!
October 10th - 11th Festival Acadians in Girard Park
We went out saturday and sunday to the festival and had a blast. We did a small trash pickup however the rain was pouring the whole two days and made the job nearly impossible. We listened to cajun music and everybody had a great time!!
October 18th Sunday at the Pepper Festival in St. Martin Ville.
Stunningly beautiful day!! The crisp air of the first days of winter coming in and it was an amazing time.  We set up our booth under the shade of the great evangeling oaks and did a great job at trash pickup all day.
October 25th Opoleusas Yambillee
upcoming event in opoleusas louisiana. we are going to do a standard trash pickup event and set up our booth.
October 31st - Nov 1st Big Brothers Big Sisters, KBON FUNDRAISER!!
We are schedueled to do the volunteer booths for both days from 3-9. We are working the door, Bartending and security as well as trash pickups. Music event with all proceeds going to BIGS of Acadiana.

We fully demonstrated to the public our ability to organize an event and it went off without a hitch.

We Gave away 1000+ trees to the acadiana area and felt great doing it!!

Trees Given Away From the  beginning of February from Bayou Operations office.
Willow Oak
Nuttal Oak
Shumard Oak
Cow Oak
Cherry Bark Oak
Persimmon
Mayhaw
Native Pecan
Native Plum
Cedar Elm
River Birch
Green Ash

Down town alive was a smash hit. We had a great location. everyone pitched in to help and we demonstrated the variety of trees available. We Danced, had fun and represented our group with a style that leaves a memory in the minds of the public.

The childrens museum was Amazing! We arrived at 9am and Setup. By 10 oclock we had over 200 people rush our little operation and leave with happy saplings and happier children. They were literally pushing eachother (kinduf funny) for the trees that we were running out of (fruit trees and river birtch). We took the fraternity guys out and made another run to the BVD to reload and ran out again by 12 oclock noon.

Artwalk was HUGE!. Thousands of people walking up and down the downtown area and everyone saw our amazing display for free trees. The Schuffelers showed up as well as many of lafayette "whos who" came to ask questions, visit and of coarse plant a tree for a great cause..... Save Louisiana.

We fully plan on making this event a yearly on our to do calendar and our only hope is that next year we can make it even bigger that this year!!!

green monkeys foundation is on it's way to building comunity centers
the green monkeys are presently involved in orginization with partisipating corporations to further  ecofriendly practices. local pollution control actions are documented by the members and are complied for studies.  green monkeys hopes to build a collection of educational material and documented involvement to further it's mission as environmental education network. grassroots community events with art and music help to showcase the goals for the orginazation.  Green Monkey locations can be found in Atlanta, Ga and LaFeyette,La.  The non profit  status allows the orginazation to get tax breaks for vital efforts with reguard to positive community aid.  enviromental aid and response is the green monkey way.  members are able to axcess a network of environmental programs on the local level. greeen monkeys hopes to continue to establish hubs around the south east and further studies in orginazation of community pollution protection programs.
